.308

*Exhale*

Some gun on an auction site went so low on a new .308 rifle, I went insane and bought it. I had no choice. It was unfair, really. He wanted over a hundred dollars less than my dealer’s cost.

Now, what kind of optics do I need? I plan to use this thing at the range for now, at 100 yards, but I would like a scope that would work later with a .260 barrel and long distances. Just once in my life, I would like to shoot something a thousand yards away.

I have the nuttiest feeling that God has been pushing me to get an AR10. I’m not really that excited about it. I can take it or leave it (or at least I could, until the price collapsed). It’s not like the .38 Super or the SW1911, which made me drool for weeks. Very strange.

Now Janet Napolitano’s goons will be putting a notation on my file. “Thinks God tells him to buy sniper rifles.”

I have no desire to drive around in a van shooting people. Honest. But I might get an urge to make a few prairie dogs pop like water balloons.

Optics… .internet tomes have been written on the subject.

Here is a pretty handy and concise buying guide written by some knowledgeable folks: http://www.chuckhawks.com/recommended_riflescopes.htm

Like you, most of my rifle shooting is done at 100 yards. I have a few Sightron Big Sky scopes that I am very happy with. Great quality at a great price point.

What type upper receiver? If no carry handle or a removable one, you have a lovely rail to mount optics. I have one like this, http://www.precisionscopes.com/store/491938/product/Leupold-66565
It has worked fine for years. You can shoot up close and way out with the EFR adjustment. The same scope is available with a 50mm objective that might work a little better in low light conditions.

The mount you choose will make the system work, research spent on that will pay off. I have to use a mount that moves the scope more forward than some as I am short armed and use a shorter stock.

I am eager to read of your experience with the “big” AR.

Start with a decent 3-9X variable. Cabela’s is your friend.

Also check out the Nikon with mil-dot reticle scopes and the Nightforce NXS scope.

On the other end of the $cale, scour the gun shows and internets for a fixed power 4X or 6X scope. Simple, durable, and economical. And light weight too. The money you save can go toward magazines. When the scope is the only thing limiting your performance, you will have a much better idea what you need.

This thing has a carbine-length free-floated tube with a rail up top. No handle. Guess I’ll need a sling.

    Now you’re talking!

    Congrats on the new rifle!

You’ll want a sling no matter what. They are a great aid in more precise shooting. Get a good one and have someone show you the best way to use it.

If you want to bust dogs at 1000 yards you ought to think about signing up for an Appleseed weekend. Very good, cheap rifle instruction. Baby steps.

    Google “ACOG.”

Congrats, and I told you so. Reloading press + M2 AP = goodness.
