Fish are Trembling

Outing Planned

We’re fishing again tomorrow! Looks like Val will be on hand, and he might bring fellow Babalu member Henry Gomez.

The wind is not making me happy. To catch dolphin, you want an east wind. If you can’t get an east wind, you at least want to avoid a west wind. Somehow, the fish know. And one report says the wind may blow from the south-southwest in the morning. That’s almost west.

I consider it a boat ride with my dad and friends. I am too old and fat to do a good job of fishing. I can do a fine job in a small boat by myself, but when you add one or two more people, it’s just too much. No one knows how to rig baits or tie hooks on, so I run in circles all the time, helping everyone else. If something goes wrong with the boat, that goes on my plate, too. So these days I don’t really worry about catching anything. I hope we do, but not enough to pass out from heat stroke.

It’s great to spend time out there with my father. We missed a lot of opportunities when I was a kid. It’s surprising how well you can erase memories like that by doing things together later in life.

I may have told you before, but my Dad was diagnosed with heart disease and was given 6 months to live. It was decided (my wife, his wife, me) that I should go out to breakfast with him every Saturday to come. Five years later he went home to be with the Lord after I got to introduce my Dad to Him.
I’m happy for you that you get to spend this time with him, and honor him by running those chores for him.

My dad will visit the Humble Home on Sunday for Father’s Day. His grandchildren will be here and he’ll get a chance to do things with them he was never able to do with his own children because he had to work to provide for them. They’ll most likely feed the fish lots of bait and may even hook a giant 3-inch-long Almost Striped Bass; we’ll grill hamburgers and Daddy will eat far too many pieces of the pound cake I’ll bake even though he’s not supposed to have it…most importanly, we’ll say a prayer of thanks because we’ll finally get to see our Daddy relax.

The year after I graduated fro college, I spent on the farm. My dad was nearing retirement and was working only part time. We ended up rebuilding a 1948 Farmall A tractor together. It is still one of my best memories. While growing up, my dad put in long hours as a plant manager and then there was the farm work to be done, so the majority of the time I spent with him was working on farm stuff. That summer was special because it was recreational work where there was no time constraint.

May God continue to give you time with your father like that. It is a blessing that lasts your lifetime – and his.
