Disfavored Tools Sell Cheap

Case in Point

Here’s something I don’t need. But I wish I did. Check out the price.

Look at that. Gorgeous. But I don’t think a radial arm saw would be of any use to me. I have the table saw for ripping and crosscutting, and I have a huge sliding miter saw for just about anything else a rotating saw blade can do.

og will probably disagree because he knows more about tools in general (and Workmates) than me, but I find the radial arm saw to be generally useless if you have a good sized miter saw and a table saw.

The arm has to be constantly trued and even the giant one you show in the link will have some inherant geometrical flexibility which will cause it to cut crooked under load.

In fact, it’s basically like your miter saw on a giant base or a crappy table saw flung apart and turned upside down.

    Just one man’s opinion…

Have you picked up an oscillating tool yet?

I was looking at the Dremel, but didn’t like the noise it made in a video demonstration.

If you need to do a lot of rough crosscutting, and have the space, the RAS is a great machine to have. A hardwood dealer that I often do business with here in No. Va. also has a full cabinet shop, and they have a rather large (16″?) RAS that gets plenty of use. Of course they frequently have a need to dock 10″, 16/4 boards that are 18″ wide, too. A lot easier than trying to push something like that over a tablesaw.
Just don’t try to rip with one, and don’t ask it to be an overarm router. The ONLY thing they do with it is rough crosscutting, and even then, they don’t turn their back on it.

You saw what else he was selling, right?

A radial arm saw is for rough crosscutting as Roland says.

Or shortening hands and arms. Whichever. It is also very effective in getting your bowels to move should you ever need assistance along those lines.

    Gerry,
That’s why I stated, “…they don’t turn their back on it.”
