Router Table Design

Clue me In

Say you’re building a router table, and the desk you’re basing it on is pretty big. Like 30″ deep.

How far back from the front edge should the router spindle be?

I’ve read that it shouldn’t be more than 16″ from the right edge, because a longer distance makes work uncomfortable.

While designing my collapseable table I kept the overall dimensions to 32″X18″ with the mount dead center. I figured that if I had to rout (router?) anything larger than say 16″ wide I would need a sturdier table anyway. I am not an expert, but I would advise you to consider how far in from the edge of the piece you might need to rout, and how far you are willing to lean over while doing your typical jobs. In other words, capacity vs. convenience. Since most routing is edge work, I would tend to keep it closer to the front, say 18-24″. I know Og and others have more experience and can advise you better.

How well did the angle iron reinforcement go, or did you need it?
