More Pre-Obama Rifle Practice
November 19th, 2008Soon We’ll be Lucky if We’re Allowed to Own Rape Whistles
I hit the gun range today and had a lot of fun. I’m pretty sure I spotted a Jewish person. That gave me hope for his race.
I shot the Romak III badly, although not as badly as I shot it before the trigger replacement. The new pull is very light, but it’s also extremely long, and I think that messes me up.
At least it cycled.
I tried the hint about focusing on the reticle markings instead of the target. It made no difference with the Romak, but it may have helped with the K31, which I shot well. Funny thing; focusing on the reticle somehow makes you feel like the rear part of the scope is about to poke you in the eye. It’s unnerving.
I went to two gun stores to ask about Auto-Ordnance M1 carbines, but they were no help. The guy at Bass Pro had no idea what an M1 carbine was. I think the Miami Bass Pro is kind of a farce. When I went in today, I noticed two things. No pistols, and no defensive long guns. I am not completely sure about the long guns, but I’m 95% sure. I think this is the biggest pansy Pro Bass store in the US. They need to shape up. At least they sell ammunition for pistols.
I found a high-powered green laser on Ebay, cheap. That will be a fun toy, IF I can find the gun.
No target photos to post. My phone came back to life after its visit to Maytag World, but it’s only firing on three cylinders, so I can’t take pictures.
Lots of people at the range. People know our socialist, anti-gun President-Elect and his goons are going to come for our guns if they can, so they’re going nuts on gun buys and range time. Very sad. Where was the fear back in October, when it could have saved America from this horrible mistake?
I’m thinking it might be fun to get a better stock for the K31. The one that came with it is crap; no two ways about it. The grip is too thick. It’s heavy. And the butt has points on it that turn my shoulder into hamburger.
I still haven’t gotten it to shoot to the POA.
Great day. Enjoy your guns while you can; I am extremely conscious of the fact that in five or ten years, I may have no guns and no place to shoot them. In anticipation of leftist fascism, I already treasure the memory of the America that was.

I was at a Bass Pro Shop just the other side of the river in Indiana a couple months ago. Rows of pistols (mostly nickel or stainless revolvers, IIRC), but the very helpful clerk did not seem to know what M1 Garand was. Maybe I mispronounced it?
It’s primarily a hunting outlet. Competitive shooting and defensive firearms appeared to be more or less unknown.

I say again: From an optical point of view, if the question of focusing on the reticle vs. focusing on the target arises, the objective of the scope is out of adjustment.
The objective forms an image of the target, which the eyepiece magnifies and transfers to your eye. If that image is not in the same plane as the reticle, the scope isn’t working right and needs to be adjusted or repaired.
The eyepiece can only focus on a single plane. If the scope is correctly adjusted, that plane contains both the reticle and the image of the target formed by the objective. When you look through, both should be at the same distance from your eye and therefore in focus at the same time.
What you are concentrating on mentally is something different.

Ric

If they are just going to take the guns away anyway, what’s the point?
Certainly you all must be hoping for some sort of a grandfather clause, or amnesty, or last minute reprieve from the governor, or something.
I’m pro-Second Amendment, but wonder what all the fuss is about. Either they are going to confiscate them or they are not. Am I missing something?
Please explain. And understand that I’m willing to be pleasantly surprised.

I know Hi Point weapons have a bad rep, but the reviews of their 9mm and .40 carbines have been pretty good. They’re cheap, too. But the prices are rising…and they’re hard to find.

HT: Confiscation would probably go over like a lead balloon. Any AWB is likely to include a grandfather clause of some sort.

Do you not have a local gunsmith with an FFL? Most of those guys will do a transfer for 5% or $25, whichever is less. Just find a wholesaler for the M1 Carbine (call Auto-Ordnance) and let the FFL know the details.
As for the K31 stock, please let me know if you find a vendor. I am unaware of anyone making aftermarket stocks for them. I suppose you could find someone to make a “bespoke” stock, but for that price I’d sooner take a band saw and a sanding belt to the stock myself.

Ric is correct on the scope image and reticle question. If the reticle looks fuzzy with the image clear you need to do some adjustments. I use a light colored back ground to sharpen up the reticle. I think some variable power scopes have a little trouble with the focus changing some at different powers.
I think some might confuse focusing on the reticle with the absolute need to focus on the front sight using irons.
I see a bill similar to the AWB showing up a year or so into the new administration. They will have to do it to appease the far left who will raise cane if they don’t.
How long will it take for them to start seating judges?

Damn. Even the BPS near Los Angeles has handguns.

Gentlepeople. You seem to be missing a possibility for the reason in the HUGE quantity of firearms and ammo purchases. It isn’t “trying to get them hoping for a grandfather clause”. I’ll say no more. I was about to get into that reason in a rather loud rant, but I won’t. Simply remember the true reason for the 2A.
