Do Not Attempt to Adjust the Picture

August 4th, 2011

I am Controlling Transmission

Tonight I got my Herzog clone running. It still has a few bugs in it, but it functions. This is really neat. I never dreamed I’d be doing this. Look at all the stuff God is allowing me to do.

Today I wrote about going through dusty items from my past. One such item is my $50 Hitachi oscilloscope. This is one of the coolest things I own. It amazes me that I know how to run an oscilloscope. I felt I needed it to diagnose the amp.

Here’s my tidy workbench.

You know you’re in full-blown mad scientist mode when you fire up an oscilloscope in your garage.

Here’s the late Jim Williams fixing a Tektronix oscilloscope in his home:

Here’s his book. Take a close look at the cover (You’ll have to navigate the “Look Inside” feature):

Is that sine wave “middle C” I see there on the scope?

Ahh, I miss the Outer Limits with all its cheesy monsters. That, BTW, is the “short form” intro… there was a longer version in the early years of the show (“…we can roll the picture…”).

If you’re old enough to remember TV sets with “Vertical Hold” controls, you might have been around to watch OL when it first aired!

That trace is 6.3 nominal volts of AC, from the filament winding on my power transformer.

Elisson, speaking of old enough: I talked my folks into buying me a used TV at a garage sale… but only after they were convinced it was “solid-state”, and not one of those tube TVs…

I gave away a nice Tektronix dual trace about 25 years ago, wish I’d been smart enough to hang on to it.

Steve, I’m happy to see you doing well and writing some.

I have that Hitachi in my garage next to the 60’s vintage Siemens next to it.
    Mad you say? BWahahahahahah.
