Dreams From the Wrong Father

You Can’t Choose the People You Help

I had an interesting dream this morning.

I decided to visit a college friend. For some reason, another friend of mine was staying with him, and I decided to go and see how they were doing.

I told the first friend I was coming, and he said something like, “Okay, but lately I’ve been thinking of shooting myself in the head.” He didn’t say it as though he were highly upset. He seemed resigned to it. The decision was made. I could tell he was inviting a response, though. He wanted me to say something so he could list his gripes. He wanted to justify his choice. He intended to explain how unfair life was and how little hope there was.

In a way, he was going to criticize God. I believe he’s an atheist, but atheists generally aren’t sincere. In the dream, he obviously wanted to express resentment, and your resentment has to have an object, even if you’re not sure what it is. When we complain about fate, we treat it like an all-powerful god we feel has done us wrong, so really, we are criticizing God as we understand him.

I prayed for him after I woke up. I don’t know if he’s in trouble or not. He had a somewhat sour outlook on life when we were in college, at least during exam times. For example, he once said he knew he was going to die young from stomach cancer, because that’s what happened to his father.

He’s Jewish and left-leaning, so he’s not what I would call a great target for evangelism. If he were in trouble, I wouldn’t be able to do much for him. The only real answer I have–the one that works–would almost certainly be laughed off.

This is how it is when you know Jesus and you also know Jewish people who complain about their unhappiness. He’s their Messiah. He came from Judaism, not the disgusting pagan cults my ancestors fell for. Still, people like me have him and his protection and blessings, and Abraham’s children can’t be helped.

The descendants of people who ate each other and worshiped rocks and trees know the God of the Jews, and very few Jews know him.
